AXEL GROEHL
Maler und Bildhauer

Ich arbeite in Themen, meist in Oel, Gouache, Acryl auf Leinwand. Seltener auf Papier oder Holz. Wenn die Zweidimensionalität des Bildes nicht mehr ausreicht um ein Thema weiter sichtbar zu machen, werde ich zum Bildhauer und arbeite vornehmlich in Bronze, Stein oder Edelstahl.
Manchmal ist es auch umgekehrt. Vom Bildhauer zum Maler ist der Weg nur etwas schwieriger. Ebenso hilft mir das Wort und aus einem Maler wird ein Bildhauer und aus einem Bildhauer wird ein Poet. Ich benutze Sätze wie ein Bild, Schriftbild, und schreibe meine Gedanken in das Werk.
Mir reicht ein Bild oder eine Skulptur nicht um einen Fortschritt im Thema zu machen, es entsteht immer ein Zyklus. Der Fortschritt beruht nicht darauf, die Grenzen einer Sache hinauszuschieben, sondern sie besser zu kennen.
Ich sehe niemals das Bild bevor ich zu malen anfange. Andererseits glaube ich, dass nur dann ein Bild fertig ist, wenn man seine Idee ganz ausgedrückt hat.
So arbeite ich in Zyklen. Ich sauge aus der Gesellschaft die Themen und Bilder ab und befördere diese durch meine Arbeit zu neuen Kommunikationsebenen.
Wenn ein Bild mein Atelier verlässt, so für immer. Wenn ich eines in einer Sammlung wiedersehe, glaube ich manchmal, es sei gar nicht von mir.
Man darf von einem Künstler nicht mehr verlangen, als er geben kann. Ich bin zufrieden wenn ich die Allgemeinheit zum Nachdenken bringe ich versuche sie nicht zu überzeugen.
Die Kunst ist da um zu erregen.
Gleichzeitig stimmt sie mich hoffnungsvoll, wenn wir meine Zyklen als Möglichkeit nehmen das Unerklärliche etwas erklärlicher, auf jeden Fall aber verständlicher zu machen.

Seit der Rückkehr aus Cincinnati nach Hamburg, Ende 2005, arbeite ich in meinem neuen Atelier an der Skulptur "Consumption", weiter im Thema "Babylon", einer Inspiration aus meiner Zeit in den USA.
Zur Zeit präsentiert die Galerie Grand Esplanade in Berlin (Germany) Werke aus meinem "Shadow" Zyklus als Einzelausstellung bis September 2006.

Im Frühjahr und Herbst diesen Jahres wird der neue Kunstkalender 2007 mit Werken aus meinem Revolutionszyklus auf der Leipziger und Frankfurter Buchmesse präsentiert.

Von Juli bis September 2006 zeigt das Fitton Center for creative arts in Hamilton (USA) zum ersten mal der Öffentlichkeit als Premiere den neuen "Babylon" Zyklus.

Painter and Sculptor

I work in themes, mainly in oil, gouache and acrylic on canvas. Less often on paper or wood. When the two-dimensionality of the image no longer suffices to convey a theme in more depth I become sculptor and work primarily in bronze, stone or stainless steel.
Sometimes it's also the opposite. However from sculptor to painter the route is somewhat more difficult. Words also offer me assistance and a painter becomes a sculptor and a sculptor becomes a poet. I shape words into images, and insinuate my thoughts into the work.
An image or a sculpture is not enough for me to progress on the theme, there is always a cycle. Progress is not based on deferring the limits of a thing, but rather on getting to know it better. I never visualize the image before I begin painting. On the contrary, I believe that an image is only finished when the idea has been fully expressed.
So I work in cycles. I siphon the themes and images from society and convey them to new levels of communication through my work.
When a picture leaves my atelier then it is forever. If I see something again in a collection I sometimes believe it is not even one of mine.
One can ask no more from an artist than he can give. I am satisfied if the general public is moved to contemplation, I don't attempt to convince them.
Art is there to stimulate. At the same time it makes me feel hopeful when considering my cycles as a possibility of making the unfathomable somewhat more fathomable, in any event, however, more understandable.

Since returning from Cincinnati to Hamburg at the end of 2005, I have been working in my new studio on the sculpture, Consumption, continuing the Babylon theme, an inspiration from my time in the USA.
The Grand Esplanade gallery in Berlin is currently showing work from my Shadow cycle as a sole exhibition until September 2006.

In the spring and fall of this year the new art 2007 calendar will be presented at the Leipzig and Frankfurt book trade fair with works from my Revolution cycle.

From July to September 2006 the Fitton Center for Creative Arts in Hamilton, Ohio will premiere the new Babylon cycle to the public for the first time.
